How to put on a brief with tabs, in nine gentle steps

Nine gentle steps, for a person lying down, in the caregivers' order: tucked underpad, removal, cleaning, rolled placement, tapes, check. The Nateen guide shows each step; the voice walks you through it in your language.

This tutorial shows general comfort and hygiene gestures. Adapt them to the person, their mobility and the instructions of their care team. When in doubt, ask a professional.

The nine steps

  1. Step 1Get everything ready: a Mati underpad across the bed, tucked under the mattress, a clean brief, wipes and a bag.
  2. Step 2Turn the person onto their side, lift the t-shirt to mid-back, unfasten the used brief, roll it up on itself as you remove it and drop it into the bag, then close the bag.
  3. Step 3Clean the skin with wipes, front to back, pat dry and apply a thin layer of barrier cream.
  4. Step 4Take the clean brief, leak guards towards the person, and roll it up over half of its length.
  5. Step 5Pass the roll between the legs, lay the wings with the tapes against the back and roll the lower wing against the body: it will pass more easily to the other side.
  6. Step 6Gently bring the person back onto their back and unfold the front part between the legs.
  7. Step 7Fold the two wings over the front part and fasten the four tapes, two on each side, without pulling tight.
  8. Step 8Check that the brief sits well between the legs, comfortable and leak-proof, and that the back sits high, by turning the person briefly.
  9. Step 9Pull the sheet up. Everything is in place, gently.
